On-site courses and online training

Making a film is a great way to tell your story. Video is one of the best ways to record and share your work, train your colleagues, and involve customers and users. My training will show you how to make better videos with the equipment you already have: smartphones, iPads, still cameras or camcorders. So you’ll be able to use video much more widely, not just on projects where you can afford a professional filmmaker. But to make good videos, you need to know the essentials of filmmaking. So my practical, hands-on training will take you step-by-step through the skills you need to plan, shoot and edit good short movies. You’ll learn how to

  • get the shots you need to tell your story
  • film shots that make sense together
  • record interviews or presentations
  • capture, add and adjust sound
  • edit your movie
  • use titles and effects

The course also covers

  • how to plan and organise your filmmaking
  • different ways of telling your story with film
  • making your film as good as it can be
  • the best formats for sharing your movie.

About me

I’m Tom Barrance, one of the UK’s most experienced film educators. I’ve taught all kinds of people how to make films: teachers, researchers, doctors, social workers, small business owners, actors, writers and more.

Equipment

My most popular training is mobile filmmaking, using iPhones, iPads or Android devices. I also teach filmmaking with DSLR/mirrorless cameras or camcorders, and editing on Mac or PC.

Course materials

You’ll get an illustrated PDF course booklet which templates, a step-by-step guide to the filmmaking process, advice and links to further information.

In-depth and follow-up

You can also book longer courses, or get follow-up training in specific skills. I can provide ongoing support, written feedback and suggestions on your filmmaking,  and online advice.

Software training

I also provide training on specific software including iMovie on Macs or mobile devices, Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere.

Where is the training available?

I can provide training on site (in the UK and Europe) or online using Zoom or Microsoft Teams.  If you’re on a tight budget, I offer a reduced rate for individual and small group training in Cardiff. Please get in touch to discuss your needs or book a course.
