I have a Macbook Pro with an i5 chip which is my everyday computer but I also have a Toshiba with Celeron Processor N2840 / 4GB Memory / 500GB HD that I hoped I could use to do all my editing. I've been doing some reading that suggest that a more powerful computer than either of mine will be needed. Would purchasing a LaCie Rugged Triple USB 3.0 1 TB external drive make a difference?

In theory it should be faster if you keep your media files on an external 7200 rpm drive. But I've had bad experiences with LaCie drives, they don't last long - especially the Rugged ones.

I'm using a Seagate Barracuda bare drive in a Startech desktop USB3 enclosure. I haven't used it heavily though. In my experience portable drives all pack up eventually, though USB3 drives are better than Firewire.
